Getting Better

How can I avoid getting a sore throat?

Boost your body’s immune system. Do at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every day and eat a balanced diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables. Take a dietary supplement if you need to. Get enough sleep: lack of sleep leads to a weaker immune system.
Avoid things that irritate your throat. Fight germs by washing your hands regularly and using disposable tissues. Keep air-borne irritants, dust and pollution to a minimum. Avoid cigarette smoke. Dress warmly and avoid rooms with very dry air. Use a room humidifier, if necessary, for your workplace and home. Replace your toothbrush regularly – about once a month.

When I have a sore throat, how long should I wait before consulting a doctor?

A sore throat is caused by an inflammation of the throat - a reaction with which the body defends itself against a viral infection in this area. Normally, the immune system will be able to get the viral infection under control in three days. That is why we recommend fighting your sore throat with a lozenge that acts as a local anesthetic. If the sore throat persists after three days, you must go see your doctor.

Isn’t it better to take an antibiotic when I have a sore throat?

If you have a secondary bacterial infection (when you can already see dots of pus in your throat), your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic. In this case, the antibiotic fights the bacteria that are responsible for producing the pus. It is very important to take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor, even if the sore throat goes away before the treatment regimen has been completed.
