What is sore throat?
Nobody enjoys having a sore throat.
It hurts to swallow, it hurts to talk – it’s the sort of discomfort that can really spoil your day. But what exactly is it? This page looks at some of the characteristics of this unpleasant ailment.
Sore throats are quite common.
But this doesn’t make having a sore throat any less unpleasant! Pain in the throat can be part of an immune response called inflammation. It’s usually the result of viral infection or irritation. Your throat becomes reddened, swollen and hot. The pain-sensing nerves in your throat get activated – and your throat begins to hurt. It’s your body’s way of telling you that your throat is under attack.
Symptoms of sore throat
- Your throat feels dry, scratchy and sore.
- It is painful to swallow, eat, drink and speak.
- The back of your throat (the pharynx) may be redder than normal.
- Your tonsils (if you still have them) may be swollen and red.
- Your voice may be hoarse.
- A bacterial infection may cause sores or white spots to appear on your tonsils or pharynx.
