How your throat works

What would you do without your throat there to help you breathe, speak, eat and drink?

It’s quite a small area but it’s very important – and it’s very sensitive. That’s why even mild sore throat can be such an uncomfortable interruption to enjoying your daily life.

The throat is made up of a number of different organs.

The anatomy of the throat includes the pharynx, the larynx, some of the trachea and the upper part of the oesophagus; these parts all have their own function but combine to make the throat. Each organ helps you in breathing air, swallowing food and using your voice. See how a healthy throat works:

The throat is a very sensitive part of the body:

most surfaces in the throat have a lot of sensory nerves, so that we can instantly feel anything
entering the throat and react as needed. You can feel the food and drink that enters your throat instantly. These are the nerves that are responsible for the pain of sore throat.
