Medicated remedies
Depending on the cause and the severity of your sore throat, there are a number of different ways you can treat it. This page looks at some of the most common types of medication currently available for the treatment of sore throat.
Local pain-killers/anaesthetics
The pain of sore throat can be effectively treated with a local anaesthetic. Mucoangin® contains ambroxol, a proven and well-tolerated substance used to relief sore throat pain by blocking the pain-sensitive nerves in the throat.
Local antiseptic agents
If the protective cell layers have been damaged by a viral infection, other germs, bacteria or fungi can multiply there very quickly. This can be counteracted by using an antiseptic such as cetylpyridinium.
Anti-inflammatory medication
Anti-inflammatory medications reduce the inflammation that cause the pain of sore throat. Care should be taken when using anti-inflammatory medications over a long period as they can damage the stomach.
Herbal treatments
Ethereal oils and plant extracts used in mouth and throat medication are valued because of their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory characteristics. However, their effectiveness hasn’t been scientifically proved in all cases. Many different products such as solutions, sprays and lozenges are available.
Cough treatments
If the sore throat is accompanied by a chesty cough, you can help eliminate the excess phlegm with a proven secretolytic treatment – such as Mucosolvan® or Bisolvon® . Ask your healthcare expert for more information.
