Home remedies
There are many ways of dealing with sore throat. While you’re using a proven sore-throat remedy from Mucoangin®, you can support your natural healing process.
Here’s an interesting look at some of the supportive ways that you can help your body recover from sore throat.
Supportive home remedies
Gargling
Gargling is an effective way of rinsing out germs, soothing your irritated throat and relaxing swollen tissue. Warm salty water makes a good gargle solution: simply stir 1/4 teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm (not hot) water. Tip back your head and gargle a mouthful at a time for about 10 seconds.
Herbal teas
Herbal teas can be very comforting when you have a sore throat. The hot liquid soothes your throat while the herbs in the tea can have a mild antiseptic or coating effect. Camomile tea is a traditional remedy for many ailments, including sore throat.
Honey-based syrups
A soothing syrup made from ingredients such as honey and lemon or cider vinegar has been used for centuries to treat sore throat. Tea made from thyme leaves can also be sweetened with honey. The leaves of the thyme plant contain a natural antiseptic called thymol. Simply mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or cider vinegar or ½ cup strong thyme tea with 1 dessertspoon of mild honey. The mixture can be gently warmed to help dissolve the honey. But don’t over-heat: if heated above 35 degree Celsius, the active ingredients in honey are destroyed.
Warm compresses or wraps
Warm compresses or wraps around the throat can help your body to fight the infection while reducing the pain of swollen glands. A traditional potato wrap is used in some countries: warm (not hot) boiled potatoes (about 300 g) are lightly mashed and pressed along the middle of a long, rectangular strip of clean cotton cloth. The sides of the cloth are folded inwards to cover the warm potato and the cloth is wrapped around the neck like a scarf. An extra woollen shawl can be used to keep the potato wrap warm.
General tips for a speedy recovery:
- Avoid straining your voice: try to talk as little as possible.
- Sipping cool liquids can reduce the pain temporarily.
- Help your body fight the infection by ensuring that you get lots of sleep and bed rest.
- Ensure the air in your room is moist: use a humidifier if necessary.
- Keep warm and avoid strenuous physical activity.
- Stop smoking and keep away from smoky environments.
- Don’t drink alcohol or highly acidic drinks.
- If your sore throat persists for more than three days, visit your medical professional.
